a good bike ride in the Oakland hills for us outta-shapers

This is a good safe dirt and paved bicycle route to ride on. You'll head uphill on a road then trail then a 2 lane road so you don't have to climb with cars flying past you.

Head to the south end of Skyline blvd. in Oakland. There is a parking lot there and a few trail heads. You don't go on those trails (but they are fun) look north and there is a paved road on the left. Take that road uphill. It will end at a dirt road. Go straight on that dirt road. Sometimes there is some trash there, watch for glass bottles, and enjoy the view. It has big bay views all along this section. There are a few uphills and downhills and you come to the intersection with Keller ave.

To your right is Skyline and just north of Keller on Skyline is a nice horse stable. You can ride around there a little but don't scare the horses. They are friendly, but ask if you can pet them. I like to take my dog there, and just kind of stay out of the way and watch them get in the rings for exercise etc.

This ride continues on the dirt trail across Keller. See this trail runs along Skyline, pretty cool huh? You pass another street and continue. Great views past Keller on the trail. Then it ends. But where it ends Skyline becomes a 2 lane road. So you ride along the right side of the right lane and watch and listen for cars. Yes it can be a busy road, but all of Skyline is 2 lanes from here to past Redwood.

It's up to you to see how far up Skyline you want to go. If you can get to the fire station that's a good ride. Just turn back and you'll have a mostly downhill ride to the staging area.

If you want a more dirt just come down the way you came up, or ride the dirt trail on the east side of Skyline. You can get on and off at the horse stable. It's a little tougher and has more climbs. And there is more horse pootie pooh.

From the trailhead to the fire station and back is about 6 miles and should take you about an hour more or less. It takes me more not less.

Today's ride was not quite that long.

I got my old bike computer going again:

4.63 miles

45 minutes

avergae speed 6.4

max speed 41.0

Hey I'm slow, whats it to ya bub?
