The Powerbook saga continues.
I am back in action on my 3400 Apple PowerBook. It is an old slow computer from 1997 worth very little on Ebay, but it works fine with a wireless card and so what the heck. I had it repaired at MacResq in Concord for the 2nd time this year so now I have spent more money than it is worth in repairs. Other than being a little slow it works OK. I use Mozilla WamCom.org build 1.3.1 and Nisus Compact for my word processing. Nisus Compact takes up 1 mb of ram pretty cool.
While I was at MacResq I asked the head tech about the new PowerBooks and if he sees any repair issues. He tipped me to a few things. The aluminum ones? They have a slippery surface and people drop them. Since they are metal cases they bend and don't crack. Then you have a bent PowerBook, and you hope when it bent it didn't knock anything around on the inside. The metal finish also scratches easily and they don't look too good all scratched up. MacResq offers some stickers to put on the PowerBooks for a better grip.
Both the iBook's and PowerBooks use a very thin screen and he said he has seen some problems with them being flexed a little too much by users. I asked him what he thought was the best buy, and he said new he liked the iBooks, and the 17 inch PowerBook if it was used as a desktop as it was too big for a portable. For a used PowerBook he liked the older Pismo series with a fast G3 inside.
Hmm those iBooks are looking sweet...
