Oakland's new radio station 92.7 FM

It is at 92.7 FM. Here is a coverage map. Note that you should really consider the area inside the red line accurate for coverage. The rest is kind of theoretical technical stuff. Here is the FCC page for the current call letters KPTI.

92.7 used to be the legendary KJAZ that broadcast out of Alameda. For the last few years it was a dance station. Click here for an almost unbelieveable list of what they played.

Last weekend at 92.7 they were Tupac radio and now they are starting out with the new format.

This week the announcement of the sale was made:

Power 92.7 Plugs Into Bay Area

April 19, 2004

Spanish Broadcasting Systems' KPTI/San Francisco has been LMAed by 3 Point Media (a division of Marathon Media) in advance of the closing of a $30 million deal that's been in place since October 2003. "The Bay Area Dance Music Channel" went to that great radio graveyard in the sky on Thursday (4/15), replaced by a short-lived all-Tupac format. On Saturday, the former "92.7 Party" flipped to "Power 92.7 The New Beat of the Bay."

The new PD is former Airplay Monitor Top 40/R&B Editor Skip Dillard. "The station will be going after the young Hip-Hop listener," Dillard tells FMQB. "Our signal primarily covers the African-American community in Oakland as well as San Francisco, and we'll focus heavy on the music and community service."

Dillard says he looks forward to staffing up soon and is accepting tape and resumes for all positions at 1801 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA. 94607.

"I would like to thank Chris Devine and Bruce Buzil, the owners of Marathon, along with our COO Tom Sly, Director of Programming John Edwards and our Operations Director Kevin Lewis for the opportunity of a career," Dillard continued. "We're really excited about making a name for ourselves in the Bay Area, which has always been a favorite market of mine and a place I've always dreamed of working in."

So a new voice arrives. Here are 3 things I'd do.

1. Hire Davey D He knows.

2. Run all Tupac weekends. You'll get much love and it'll sound great. Everyone will listen in.

3. Put Street Soldiers on the air.

and maybe a Gospel show on Sunday mornings?

Got a suggestion? Send it in. Make it thoughtful and intelligent. The guy in charge knows his stuff, he is not just some investment banker with a radio station. The signal does not have full Bay Area coverage and is directed right at Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, and San Francisco. It could be awesome. Oh and tell your friends. The station might not make it on raw Arbitron ratings, they don't have the signal to cover enough people to compete with KMEL or Wild 94.9, but can and hopefully will make it on community support.
