The Shortwave And the Calling (and he sued Wilco!)

Wow what a cool story.

This guy gets fascinated by the "numbers" broadcasts he hears on shortwave radio. Really gets into it, for years...

He is into the ambient and found sounds thing as music. Lucky for him he also runs a music label, and at some point puts out The Conet Project it includes audio of a shortwave spy broadcast of a woman saying "Yankee. Hotel. Foxtrot." Wilco used it, the guy sued.

Here is a .pdf of the booklet from the Conet Project, with info about the numbers stations. They really are weird to hear. Just somebody reading numbers over and over.

There's alot more it's a good read:

He sounds like a Negativland kind of guy. There used to be a club DJ who used a live police scanner on stage. I can't remember who it was. Moby? No I don't think it was somebody that big. Oh wait maybe it was a band. I saw it at the Covered Wagon. I think...
