Bay Area Radio Digest: RIP Steve Capen

Bay Area Radio Digest:

Stephen Capen, who piloted some of the funniest morning shows ever heard in these parts, died Monday night (Sept. 12) after fighting lung cancer for two years. 'Cape' was best known in the Bay Area as morning host at KSAN and KFOG, but his voice was also heard on numerous other stations locally, in one capacity or another, including KFRC, KSFX/KGO-FM, KMEL, KRQR, KDBK (Double 99), KTID (San Rafael), KUSF and KVON/KVYN (Napa).

  1. Rick,
It's true. As his son, I can vouch. He was a beautiful man and his absence will be felt across a rather large network of people, audiences and friends.

I sat there with him before he passed and contemplated the life he lived. There's such a story that goes with the name... as would be for most, but with this one, at least for me, it's special.

  2. I heard about Stephen Capen's untimely death the other morning on the KFOG morning news. I was utterly shocked, and greatly saddened. Capen was a true adult wit...funny, entertaining, and irreverent...without reducing himself to the level of the toilet humor so common among so-called shock jocks. I knew Capen from his days at KSAN and then its successors, and those years provided some very happy memories thanks to him. May you rest in peace, CakePan!

  3. Charlie,

Don't know if you remember me from a couple years back - your dad and I were the oldest of friends -my heart is broken. As are many others, I'm sure. He has been my rock for the last 5 or 6 years, and life will not be the same.

  4. Charlie,

Alas, I never got to meet you, but like your father, I am sure you are a man of great heart. And today there are not enough tears in the world...From your post I am hoping that he did discuss his memoir with you. I suggested it to him some months ago. At first I think he dismissed it, but as time went on he realized it was something he wanted to do and was gathering materials for it. His life was extraordinary, as was the man.

  6. Stephen's name just popped into my mind as I was at the computer and I thought I'd see what he had been up to or where he was now on his adventure. I was saddened to hear of his death.

I worked with him briefly at KSAN when he arrived in town. I was immediately struck by his brilliant mind. It had no boundaries. I watched him in awe as he literally bounced off walls while carrying out some fantastic improv he had set out on.

    His unique on-air style
was an inspiration to find my own voice. To never settle for a cheap immitation of someone else. That search continues and it always conjurs up indelible images of Stephen.

I think I last spoke with him in about 1993 and he was as kind, generous and funny as he ever was. We shared a short conversation where I got to tell him how much I admired him. I knew the man for a month or two but I will never forget him.

To his family, he was one of a kind.
