Scott Muni radio legend gone

Radio legend Scott Muni died. I only ever heard tapes of him, never met him, but he was one of the greatest radio disc jockeys ever. Before people entertained with sarcasam, and poopy jokes and shock jocks (not that there is anything wrong with that) there were guys like Muni and Wolfman Jack who just ROCKED the tunes and had fun on air doing it. They weren't bigger than the music, they loved the music, thay loved the listeners. They knew their place was to make it fun for us to listen to the music we liked.

more here at NYC's Q104 tribute page including aircheck samples etc.

A 1985 aircheck here web site says:

This star-studded aircheck compilation from October and November 1985 features Muni and other WNEW-FM personalities at the Hard Rock Cafe with Joe Piscopo, Mayor Ed Koch, David Bowie, Billy Joel, and Frank Zappa. There's lots of great production, too, including several minutes of the soundtrack choreographed to the giant fireworks display on the evening of November 1, 1985.

I just pulled this straight off AllAccess.com a free radio news site updated daily. Good stuff if you are into it.

ALL ACCESS is saddened to report that legendary radio personality, and CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock WAXQ (Q104.3)/NEW YORK's SCOTT MUNI passed away last night (9/28) at the age of 74. He'd been recovering from a series of strokes. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and many fans.

MUNI joined Q104.3 in 1998, for an daily show from noon-1p which began with his signature "Beatles Block." In his early career he'd replaced ALAN FREED at WAKR/AKRON, and then moved to NEW YORK in the late 50s as of the WMCA-A "Good Guys". He moved to WABC-A for four years and his name became synonymous with "THE BEATLES" until 1964.

MUNI moved to WOR-FM, and then in late 1967 he joined WNEW-FM where he spent the next 31 years of his career. As PD at WNEW, MUNI is credited with turning WNEW into one of the country's first progressive rock radio stations. MUNI enjoyed the same legendary status as the artists that he played and is featured side by side with them in an exhibit that honors radio personalities at the ROCK AND ROLL HALL of FAME IN CLEVELAND.

MUNI hosted countless syndicated radio programs including "SCOTT MUNI's WORLD OF ROCK" and "TICKET TO RIDE."

Said ZACH MARTIN, producer of MUNI's show on WAXQ since 1998, "No one ever had a bad word to say about SCOTT. Putting aside for a moment the absolutely indelible mark he's left on the music world ... of all the hundreds and hundreds of personalities he's interviewed, met and spoken too ... no one ever had anything bad to say about him. He was the ultimate fan. I feel privileged to have known him and worked with him for this long. The mold has been broken ... there will never be another like him."
