"The American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP) is a nationally prominent charity watchdog service whose purpose is to help donors make informed giving decisions."
Ever wonder if you are donating money to a charity that will use your donation to host cocktail parties and fly in expensive clebs to fund raising events? I do.
The AIP has a very useful webpage to find a charity that uses donations for their cause, and grades them.
Here is a page about their criteria.
from their faq:
----
Q. What is AIP?
A. The American Institute of Philanthropy is a nonprofit charity watchdog and information service.
Q. Why do I need AIP?
A. Because your charitable dollars are too precious to waste on organizations that do not spend your money wisely. AIP is the only charity watchdog to research, evaluate and grade charities nationwide. AIP is not afraid to take a strong stand about the practices of specific charities and provide information that some charities would rather not disclose. AIP carefully reviews each charity's financial records, cross checking information from state and federal government filings. AIP provides you with the important knowledge that will help you make funding decisions with greater confidence.

Here are their tips for giving
From their Top Rated page this is their list of top rated International Relief and Development charities. This shows the charity with a link (I added the links), a contact phone number, and the AIP grade.
Have a look and as AIP says:
"Because many factors determine a worthy charity, we at the AIP suggest that you use the ratings on this page not as the sole determining factor in your decision, but rather as an aid."
