Yahoo is holding my photos hostage, F.U. Yahoo

My hard drive crash has led me to find files I have had at various places. One place I have used is My Yahoo. I have had my Yahoo account for years, using the email, news, and lots of their services. I have been a pretty happy Yahoo camper.

Today I went to check on my photos. I have some vacation pictures there of some camping trips, and various trips to Baja for some fishing with friends. The Baja trips include some nice dolphin and whale shots.

So when you go to Yahoo Photos and are signed in you see thumbnails of your photos. Then you can click on a thumbnail and a slightly larger single picture appears.

I thought I'd download my full size photos from Yahoo and put them on my iBook. I mean they are mine...

Well today I couldn't see a way to do that. I could save the single photo (after the thumbnail click) but that wasn't my fullsize photo I had uploaded. I could still upload a new photo, print, delete, and move photos around, but I didn't see how to download my full size photo. I then clicked on the Help link and saw this:

Can I download and save my photos back to my hard drive?

Yes. You can download photos back to your hard drive in several ways:

You can click on the "Download" button when viewing the screen-sized image.

Or you can download photos by right-clicking with your mouse and selecting "Save As." Select the directory to download the photo into, and click "Save."

Note: Only SBC Yahoo! or BT Yahoo! users can download their original, high-resolution photos that they uploaded to their Yahoo! Photos accounts. To do this, go to the Photo Detail page and click the "Download" button.

So I can only download the "medium" size photo? They are my files! Yahoo is using them to hold me hostage and using them to market more services to ME! Looking around the net I guess they started doing this about 1 year ago. I bet a lot of people don't know it yet. I didn't until I wanted to use one of my dolphin pictures for my desktop.

Think of all the people who have their photos at Yahoo who will be shocked (a nice word for it) when they find out Yahoo won't let them have their own files.

From the Yahoo Terms Of Service:

-----

6. MEMBER CONDUCT

You understand that all information, data, text, software, music, sound, photographs, graphics, video, messages or other materials ("Content"), whether publicly posted or privately transmitted, are the sole responsibility of the person from which such Content originated. This means that you, and not Yahoo!, are entirely responsible for all Content that you upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available via the Service. Yahoo! does not control the Content posted via the Service and, as such, does not guarantee the accuracy, integrity or quality of such Content.

So my photos are my responsibility. Yahoo does not control the content. Fine I want them back.

  1. I think if you join Yahoo Plus and use their free trial, you can download your full size pictures then cancel your Plus account.

    That might work.
