Well another great NCAA tourney. I liked both teams and had seen them play more than any other teams this past season. I was kind of rooting for UNC.
Here's why college kids playing basketball is so good to watch. TV sports guys won't say it. The NCAA would never say it. Players might deny it. But it is true.
The kids fu*k-up. That's what makes it fun.
They play with lots of heart and determination, but unlike the pros they don't all have the skill. They are likely to do the most stupid things at the worst time. Anything could happen at anytime. 10 point lead? Not for long! Some crazy turnover, or calling a timeout when you don't have any left, these college kids could do anything!
Take tonight. Illinois could tie the game with about 35 seconds to go. An Illinois player drives down the lane, the play called must have been for him to kick out a pass to an open guy after the defense collapsed in on him. 2 things went wrong.
1) It looked like he drove a little too deep. When he tried to kick out the ball it was tipped by a UNC guy and then became a turnover that lead to a UNC score.
2) If he would have looked up he would have seen the hoop about 2 feet away. Drive. Jump. Score. It was an easy 2. Maybe 3 with a foul. No turnover.
Think about these crazy games. You remember the fantastic play but not the bonehead play that led to the turnover, or the crazy 40 ft. 3 point try before.
College games are full of these kinds of plays.
This isn't a put down, I love the games. The combination of trying really hard and the very real chance of fu*king up at any time is a good one!
I also watched some women's tourney bball. I thought they had some great games as well. The Stanford women had to go home a little early. The women's game is way more physical than I had thought. Good stuff.
