There is a lot of mystery and hoo hah about him and the car. It evidently disappeared and/or was parted out and everyone who ever put a spanner to it paid the ultimate price, as we all must.
It was a Porsche Spyder. He was on his way to a compete in a car race in Salinas and he and his mechanic got hit by another driver and both James and mechanic Rolf Wutherich died. That model of Porsche is really low to the ground and was painted a silver color. Some speculate that on a bright sunny day the other driver may have never seen James Dean on the road until it was too late.
Cool guy, great movies, especially loved Giant.
