I went to San Francisco's Aquatic Park to watch the Moet Cup today. It was pretty cool. The boats are so big and fast. The 2 don't always go together you know. The course is along the waterfront and the Municipal Pier seemed to be a good place to watch.

The boats race upwind then downwind with a buoy marking the place to turn at each end. In the bay the wind blows from the Golden Gate bridge to the east bay hills. The eastern buoy was just east of Alcatraz today and the boats came downwind fast and hooked a tight turn then headed up. The first 2 times they angled towards the North and away from me, but the last time both boats came right for us. They were aimed right for the pier then with about 150 feet they cranked it over and headed away on the opposite tack. They got so close you could hear the grinding and snap of the sails followed by the groan of the boat taking all that wind and leaving us. It all happened in a flash. First Oracle then Alinghi. Wow.

I was going to photoblog but my digital camera doesn't have that kind of zoom. I am taking pictures with an old Olympus OM 1 manual. We'll see if the pictures come out any good.

The Golden Gate Yacht Club has some pictures and of course Latitude 38 has a daily blog with photos to check out.

They race twice a day around 1 pm and 3 pm. The times slide around a little. They race Saturday but not Sunday. The fireworks got fogged out Monday night they might go off Wednesday.

It is all on The Outdoor Life Network (OLN) check your local listings.

Try and get to the city Saturday if you can't make it during the week.
