Free FM arrives and nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Stern moving to Sirius has finally brought out some changes. Infinity launched their new national format Free FM today and announced plans for the future.

here's the press release

My MaryMapes guess was wrong on all counts. Stern does not move to kick it off, and David lee Roth does get a gig. So does Adam Carolla. Jimmy Kimmel is a creative consultant. In Jan. Penn Jillete gets a 1 hour show (1 hour?!)

A few things have happened. The new Free FM format has rolled out. It is FM talk and is a new thing Infinity is doing across the country. They also announced some of the Stern replacement hosts.

Locallly Free FM came on the air and when Stern goes from Live 105 they say:

"KITS-FM in San Francisco will launch the MORNING MUSIC CO-OP, an entertainment-based program featuring alternative music with unprecedented listener involvement/interaction and minimal commercial interruption. The station's on-air programming attributes will include music-oriented town halls, sponsorship of "locals-only" concerts, monthly music and movie listener correspondents, frequent auditions for permanent positions on the show, listener advisory reports, and Q&A sessions with station executives."

Hmm no host named. You know who would be GREAT for a music based morning show on 105? My buddy and yours Steve Masters, a perfect fit!

The Free FM lineup is at the the link.

My first take: Sounds like farty jokes and men behaving badly radio, probably just what Stern listeners want. The current Tom Leykis show is one of the worst things ever on the radio. A few years ago he was a left wing talk show guy, kind of an anti Rush Limbaugh. He was smart and pretty good. But I guess it didn't work so he flipped his gig to drinking and sex jokes and it is pretty bad, no really bad. But hey he's been nationally syndicated for years so people must like it.

Locally at Free Fm the Dog Pound is going to do mornings until Jan. Darian O'Toole will be mid-days and John London will do afternoons and Leykis nights.

Free FM at first look it seems like a shot gun approach with a little bit of everything, some guys who are pretty inexperienced, some local talent goes national, some (fairly unsuccessful) syndicated shows get repackaged and a fresh (re)start. Looks like Live 105 said "...um no thanks" to any of the Stern replacements. There are a lot of talk stations in the SF market, and honestly this will have a hard time making it. Stern fans quickly scatter when his show is over. Will they go to Free FM all day for their "I'm so drunk and those boobies are so big" radio fix?

As with many things in life I dunno...

Finally a quote from an Infinity guy:

"Infinity's FREE FM stations will feature an eclectic mix of personalities, whose distinct creativity, perspective, sense of humor, intellect and unpredictability do not fall under the guiding principals of any particular narrowcast theme or ideology," said Joel Hollander, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Infinity. "An entertaining hybrid of provocative, political, pop culture, news, music and lifestyle formats, our next generation of FM stations will be personified by their conviction, passion, originality, fearlessness and innovation which is not heard anywhere else on the radio."

Wow I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition...

NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is creativity!... creativity and perspective... perspective and creativity... Our two weapons are creativity and perspective... and a ruthless sense of humor! Our three weapons are creativity and perspective, and ruthless sense of humor... and an almost fanatical devotion to fearless innovation... Our four... no... Amongst our weapons... Hmf... Amongst our weaponry... are such elements as creativity, perspectiv... I'll come in again.
