Lake County cleanest air in the state, again

Clear Lake Observer reports:

"County's air is cleanest in the 'Golden State'

Formal designation by the California Air Resources Board (ARB), delivered at its meeting on Thursday, Jan. 20, acknowledges Lake County as continuing to have the cleanest air in the state.

'Nearly all of us appreciate clean air, but keeping the air clean doesn't just happen,' said Bob Reynolds, air pollution control officer for the Lake County Air Quality Management District. 'Our clean air standards are set by the Air Resources Board, an agency of the state government that oversees the work of 35 different Air Districts that implement local programs.'

The ARB issues formal 'attainment designations' each year, concerning air boards' compliance with State Ambient Air Quality Standards. The designations are based on three years of air monitoring measurements to establish air quality data.

For the 16th year in a row, the Lake County Air Basin was the only area in the state to be designated in attainment with all air quality standards for ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead, visibility reducing particles, sulfates, hydrogen sulfide and vinyl chloride. Lake County is the only air basin to meet visibility standards, a measure of air clarity.
