Sirius iPods, Mel and MP3's

This article says:

Mel Karmazin, chief executive officer of Sirius Satellite Radio, has had discussions with Apple about incorporating satellite radio into iPods, although there is currently no interest in adding such a feature.

Mr Karmazin told a conference in New York that Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple Computer, currently did not believe iPod users needed anything other than the ability to download thousands of songs. However, he said this might change in the future, especially if satellite radio provided more interesting content.

"Whether you put satellite radio in a cell phone, video game or MP3 player this could be an enhancement," Mr Karmazin said, comparing it to Sony's decision to add radio to its Walkman cassette player.

I say:

The portable satellite radio units are big bulky and ugly, 3 things the iPod is not. I don't think an iPod can retain its small size and nice interface and be a satellite unit. But how's this for an idea. Sirius and XM use MP3 for audio streaming and make hour long blocks avail. for download for iPods and every other portable music player on the market.

Will that happen? Maybe not.

Mel K. has been pretty anti streaming for his radio stations. He used to say that to put his radio stations on the web means people won't listen to his stations over the air. (oh it also costs money, Mel hates spending money) He may have a point but I would say that if your stations are good enough that people will listen on their computer they will be turned on enough to listen elsewhere. Even now that Mel is gone it is a rare Infinity station that streams audio on the web.

You can listen to XM and Sirius on line now and various computer programs will record any audio your computer plays and save it as an audio file that you can convert to an MP3 (check Audio Hijack Pro for the Mac) but a deal between Apple and XM/Sirius to make it an easy download from the iTunes store would be nice.
