The 2005 Winter radio ratings came in today.
KFOG? Spectacular. Very Good. One of the top adult stations in the San Francisco market! (SJ numbers not in yet) I've never had more people listening to me. More importantly I'm really having fun and playing a great mix of music. Totally diggin' it.
My X- station? Not as well. For some reason they seem to want to not tell people "WE ARE THE BEST STATION AND WE PLAY THE BEST MUSIC" Gee it worked for us in the 80's and 90's... I saw some bus billboard that said "we're as messed up as you are", after seeing today's ratings 1/2 of that seems to be true.
They gotta stop the negative "cute" shit. No more apologies, no more "we've messed up" stuff. Tell people you play great music, that's why they tune in. Then shut up and play it. Not 90 seconds of it, and don't run phone calls and contests all f-ing day long. Play the damn songs on the radio and tell people you play great sh*t and do all day long. People don't tune in to hear cool insider radio jokes or gags or promotions. I've always thought my X and KMEL could be programmed in kind of the same way. It's the same age demo... KMEL has (for years) been on top of their game. Here's their magic formula. The DJ's are on the air having a good time playing the best music and telling you that it is. Awesome positive energy and not a lot of crap. The station moves. You want to stay tuned in because the next set of MUSIC KMEL is going to play is great and they tell you it is. That's what their listeners want. That's what all radio listeners to music stations want. My X puts too much other crap in the mix then tries to be hip by telling you how crappy it is? I know it is a "joke" but what's the point? It's not even funny.
WTF?
I really want them to do well, I have friends there and it is healthy for the radio market to have them stick around. But they are doing a horrible job of presenting the music.
On the other hand what the hell do I know? I don't see research or read the trades or go to conventions. Never been anything but a dj.
Here is an almost useless look at the new ratings. Useless because it is male and female ages 12 plus all day and night and weekends. Much more important is each stations demo, 25 to 54 men and women being the "Big Daddy" of them all. But Arbitron strictly enforces a ban on publishing any numbers except 12+. so here they are:

Soooo...were the good ratings a factor in Susquehanna's decision to put up the For Sale sign on the KFOG/KSAN/KNBR house? (According to BF Torres in the Pink Section)
ReplyDeleteNo, it was a family decision. They are selling their entire radio division as one big package, estimates are the sale price will be between 2 to 3 Billion dollars!
ReplyDeleteScroll down for my post about the for sale announcement.
