Labor Day music day 3 Sausalito Art Festival

Day 1: Saturday at Konocti

Update: I just found out the Labor Day weekend donations from Konocti's 2 shows totalled $26,000 for the Red Cross, and the Doobie Brothers auction at Saturday's show got $16,000 for the National Veterans Foundation.

Wow.

Day 2: Sunday at Oakland Art and Soul Festival

Day 3:

After the trip to Konocti then the Oakland Art and Soul Festival, I was pretty beat but I love Los Lobos, always fun to see live, and since they were playing Monday at the Sausalito Art Festival I wanted to go. To drive there and find parking would be a hassle. On a weekend traffic from Oakland to there would probably take an hour or more.

If I took the boat it would still take about an hour but be far more enjoyable. The 1 mpg of the boat? Well I try not to think about that...

My brother in law and his wife decided to come along. That's great because we don't get to hang out enough, so we met up and off we went. The day was sunny and not too much wind but still I only cruised at about 12 mph to save fuel. We passed the new east span of the Bay Bridge, it is looking good and close (well kind of close) to being finished. I'll take pictures next time I promise.

We cut across between Treasure Island and Angel Island since the water was so flat. With all the people that live around here it is something that the water is not crowded. It is a very nice place to "get away" for a few hours.

I was able to get a slip at Mcgrath Pacific right in front of the Bay Model an amazing huge model of the bay and delta showing water depths and flow. They have lots of history about the area on display and I highly suggest you go. It's free!

So to the art festival! The art was amazing. Most of it was well into the thousand dollar and up range, some of the kinetic sculpture and metal sculpture were really something. I didn't buy but wanted to.

I was into seeing the music. On stage as we got there was Marcia Ball a rockin good artist with a real gumbo sound and a tight band. She is always good to hear and I caught about the last 1/2 of her set. We walked around and looked for some food. To our surprise, there wasn't much grub to be had. But we got hot dogs and something to drink, then took a tour of the Bay Model, and made our way into the tent to see Los Lobos.

They did a nice set, not too long, but lots of favorites from earlier albums, the Dead song "Bertha" that they do live turned into a big crowd sing-a-long. They did rock, polka, cuban, english, spanish, ballads, even a cool cover song in the encore. It's nice to see a band play such a wide range of music and have fun onstage. The crowd was really diggin' it.

Los Lobos are a taping friendly band and you can get live shows from the web. Here's a link to download the set and download help

Yes that's right The Who's "My Generation" done live by Los Lobos!

So back to the boat, the wind had picked up in the late afternoon so we came back from Sausalito to the north of Angel Island in Raccoon Straight then headed south. Angel Island protects you from the wind and waves but as soon as you start to clear the south end of the island both really pick up. Boaters call it The Slot, between the south tip of Angel Island and north tip of Treasure Island. The afternoon wind almost always blows, and the waves build from the Golden Gate bridge to the east bay shoreline. It isn't too dangerous, but you have to pay attention. Like looking out for the wind surfer on my port side smashing across the waves. With waves crashing on the windward side of the boat we all got in under the hardtop and continued on.

Like I said we didn't really eat much in Sausalito so we pulled the boat up to the guest dock at Jack London Square and had a nice dinner at Scott's.

When we left it was a clear night with just a bit of moon showing in the southern sky. With the navigation lights on we headed down the estuary to our slip, and called it a (long) day. Lotsa fun, relaxing, and time spent with family and good music.

Labor Day 2005, Lake County, Oaktown, and on the water to Sausalito. Not Bad.
