Round The World Biodiesel boat in SF

It isn't everyday you get to see a boat like Earthrace. You are all welcome to come down and check out this very unique boat at Pier 39 this weekend.

What is this all about? Foghead Erik emails:
----
The brains and head dude behind this poject is Peter Bethune, a former engineer for Oil Exploration from New Zealand who realized the finite supply which his home country had become dependant upon. NZ lags far behind the world in alternative energy, and Peter realized that to stoke the imagination of his boat crazy country mates, he needed to something radical...

Hence the project, Earthrace and this crazy fast craft intended to break the round the world record using Bio Diesel

By the way a call out to anyone who knows anyone who supplys Biodiesel in Bay Area, they are running low, and could use a donation.

They will be at Hyde Street Pier Thursday, and move to Peir 39 for Friday Saturday and Sunday, and plan on visiting McCovey Cove Friday and Saturday Nights
at game time.
----
Eirk has lots of cool outdoor sailing and surfing photos at his webpage. Go to the link for the boat's web page for more. "More" means videos of building the boat, all the construction details, travel logs of the trip so far and much much more. It is a very well done site.

If you are heading down to check it out bring some biodiesel. Really. This is a pretty grass roots (pun intended) project and a 5 gallon jug of fuel will really help them out. Of course if you want to be a big name sponsor you can sign up to do that as well.

PS Why the weird design? Well more than looking cool it is made to slice into the waves, not ride on top. So it is constantly cutting into the faces of even small swells as you can see here.

So head to San Francisco this weekend. Bring a gas can to the San Francisco Biofuels Cooperative then head to Pier 39 and check out this unique boat and donate your fuel to the cause.
