Memorable Memorial Day Weekend

American flags were flying everywhere, from houses, from boat docks and Clear Lake was looking good for the 3 day weekend! Clear water, not too hot, not much wind, and I had 2 outdoor dinners with no bugs at Rancho Ricardo! I think the place was rockin' much more so than I have seen in a few years. Lots of boats, kids, wakeboaders, loud music etc. I love it!

The places near me had friends up, young kids, guests and boats tied up 2 across. It was nice to see the lake getting used by all these people.

I had a fellow Bay Area radio guy who shall have no name mentioned here stop by with some Andre's BBQ Saturday night. That's the local BBQ joint, run by a guy that works with MC Hammer. My friend Rob showed up Sunday and my Oakland neighbours came by Monday. My neighbours up there had a cookout late Monday afternoon. What a great group of people they all are. It was a really good weekend for me.

And as a bonus the Clear Lake Cardinals won their softball championship and finished the season 27-0 and a local Lake County resident using Lake County grapes took a bronze medal in the 2007 Winemaker International Wine Amateur in Shiraz/Syrah category!

As I'm sure you know as of 2007 Clear Lake is the ESPN B.A.S.S. record setting lake, and the #1 largemouth bass lake in the world. So of course I had to fish a little!

I fished some on Sunday with my wife and friend Rob. They drop shotted I threw a Spot Remover stand up jig with a green pumpkin Trick worm. Hey we caught fish and had fun for about 45 minutes late in the day.

But then the big fun started...

I had a 1/2 day guide trip booked for Monday and fished with my buddy Rob "Mr. P" a middle school teacher from Pleasanton. As you might know teachers get a little buggy late in the year. Rob said it has been a pretty stressful year for him.

The trip was on fire! It was so good my friends will never believe me!

I was out on a guide trip with Bob Myskey of www.fishclearlake.com. We (Rob and I) wanted to try topwater in the morning, we met Bob in Lucerne at 6:30 and headed out trying some spots on the upper east side of the lake. We didn't land many, and moved towards the Narrows, not much action there either.

So Bob said reel them up and we moved to fish the next 4 hours on spots above Shag Rock. Man it was on. Smaller fish were up tight, bigger fish were deep. Rob had the big fish over 6, I had a big fish over 5, lots of 4's in the mix our best five were close to 25. Total for the day was 64 healthy hard fighting fish most jumped out of the water at least once all caught in the last 4 hours from 7:30 to 11:30 and total weight safely over 125. It was 3's and up, not many dinks. I kept telling Bob to fish with us, but he was too busy to get a line in the water! It was hard to stop. It was an unreal day! Thanks Bob!

The water was still pretty clear. We could see the fish fight for most of the hook ups. I saw one pointed right at me shake its head hard about 10 times, it was cool to see that. Almost all of the 64 fish jumped out of the water at least once.

Bigger fish were deeper. We caught the fish on drop shot, very little action, almost dead stick. Not much shad seen in the water, hope that isn't a bad sign.

The back story for this trip is a cancelled trip from a few weeks ago when beautiful Spring left and winter came back to Clear Lake for a visit Rob and I had a trip scheduled with Bob for a Friday. It was wind and rain all week and Bob called me and said hey let's not go. You're not going to get the bite I know you want. We can save it for when the conditions improve.

Rob and I were kind of bummed, any day fishing is a good day really. And he and I do some salt water fishing in pretty bad conditions, but we understood if the guide calls and doesn't want to go that is probably the right call. So we had our make up trip Monday.

Thanks Bob for knowing to cancel, and the great Spring trip.

My best fishing tip I could ever give? A few times a year save up some money, forget about buying/towing/launching/filling up/ your boat. Don't worry about the tackle to use. Get a friend and split the cost, or take your kid, and hire a guide for your favorite lake!
