Football and BBQ

I saw a special on the new Monday Night theme song this year. It is the old song with Hank Jr., but they always change it up a little each year. The Brian Setzer Orchestra is on it this year along with Bootsy Collins and Ritchie Sambora, and others. Should be rockin', and yes I am Ready For Some Foooooootballllllll!

The Football Pool is ON this year. I shall be talking a bit about it on my show, you know propping the best picks of the week and keeping track of the overall winner.

If you are in first place you get a new TeeVee for your Man/Woman Cave. Sweet!

Come join in the fun here!

Even better for you is that I ONLY pick with my heart not my head, and I can now tell you that I will always pick the 49ers and Raiders to win every week. I will also try to never pick other NFC West or AFC West teams to win. They must all lose so our teams do well.

I think you can see that I will not win! I couldn't win the grand prize anyway. And well like I used to say when I raced motorcycles, if no one comes in last how do you know when the race is over?!

BBQ, ahh the sweet goodness of a fine Q. I had planned on writing some BBQ tips for Fogheads this summer, but well that didn't happen. I promise I'll get to it. I'll have my favorite tips about cooking with gas, wood, smokers, and more. It'll be good.

One day I'll also make it to KC for some of that city's famous Q. Perhaps you've had KC Masterpice sauce. It is really good, and yes it does come from KC. It is that thick sugar-y sauce that most everyone loves. Me too.

But I'd always heard about Arthur Bryant's. Famous place. I really want to go some time. I was poking around on the web and saw you could get their sauces. Hmm well if I can't have their meals, I could get a little of their flavor on mine. So I got a bottle of all thee.

I cooked some chicken on my smoker the Big Green Egg. Oh man I gently heated up some sauce, and I added part A (well AB) to part C (chicken) and gave it a taste test.

Oh man it was

AWFUL!

Huh what?! How could this be? I tried all three, I didn't like any of them. I looked on the web and saw not everybody sings the praises of Arthur Bryant's. Evidently their sauce is an "acquired taste." Ok I'll go along with that. It doesn't have any taste like that sweet molasses based sauce. Is is very spicy, not really hot, but it kind of reminds me of an Indian flavor, and more bitter vinegar based.

I really like the Carolina vinegar based sauces. My favorite off the shelf sauce is the Evertt and Jones Super-Q sauce, it is a little vinegar, and a little tomato, and a little sweet all in one.

So reading people talking about these Arthur Bryant sauces they say try them more and you will get into them. Ok twist my arm to Q some more! But first on leftover chicken, heated up with some sauce, mmm better. Then a flank steak under the broiler, chopped up a little and coated with a little sauce, even better at first. I had a few samples and man it was working.

By the end of that meal call me hooked. I love the bitter bite, the really unique vinegar and paprika flavors really punch out in your mouth. Weird if you are thinking of that sweet sticky BBQ taste, but after a few tries you come to really like it. I think it matches better with beef and pork.

If you want to try something different give it a go. You can get some from here.

Up next a beef brisket burnt ends and some Arthur Bryant's.

Good Q recipes here.
