Tonight on the show the KFOG Quiz question was what happened in Hong Kong on June 30th 1997. Here's an email from the winner that knew it was the handover from British to China.
Thx for tickets tonight! I am big big fan of both Snow Patrol & Plain White T's. You probably could tell that my voice was shaking because this was my first time calling & winning from KFOG. Knowing how busy you were, I was too nervous to talk to you.
I was actually born in SF; but, thx to my parents choosing to retire in HK, I actually went to elementary school in HK. Then we moved back to US, so I went to high school & college here. I actually lived in Oakland (Lake Merritt) when I went to Berkeley.
Because I went to elementary school in HK, I was used to British school system. Went to England few times sightseeing. Loved British bands, also Scotish bands like Snow Patrol & Franz Ferdinand!
I left HK in 70's. I did not return to HK until I think 2004. It was a side trip flying to HK after sighting Beijing. I would not remember 1997 but I did remember June 30, watching the hours & hours of coverage provided by SF Channel 26 on HK turnover, Prince Charles representing England, the firework, etc. So, it was just dumb luck that I knew the answer.
You ought to visit HK! You can take the one hr train ride from HK to southern province of Guangdong, China. Above all, visit Scotland & check out the music scene there.
