Free FM: Howard Stern a tool for Infinity?!

FMQB says there are a huge number of Infinity stations in major markets that will be part of a new Infinity "Free FM" talk format on FM stations. What's the deal?

Well with Howard moving to Sirius at the end of the year or sooner Infinity is looking to have stations in markets that are free (over the air) and will have edgy talk on the FM dial "Free FM".

Rather than just worrying about replacing Howard at his current stations they are setting up a whole network of stations to get the Howard audience.

Will it have local flavor? Will it be all the same shows syndicated across the country? A mix of both? Don't know. What about Adam Carolla? David Lee Roth? Kevin and Bean? Toyota Corolla? Spam Spam Spam Spam and Spam?

My (MaryMapes) guess is David Lee Roth isn't getting a radio show, that is all kind of bs. He is a good radio guest not a host. Big Difference. Then who? Probably a mix of people across the country to replace Howard, but with this Free FM thing, maybe not. They might replace him with a new talk station in each market on stations that currently have Howard or have formats that aren't too popular.

When does it roll out? My guess is soon. They probably want to have something up and running before Howard leaves. Howard is ripping on Infinity all day so what's the difference what station he is on. They move him to this new network and he helps launch this Free FM thing for them. Listeners follow him, advertisers as well. Everyone wants to hear him bitch about it. Lots of publicity. Everyone across the country instantly knows about Free FM. When Howard leaves Free FM stays on air.

Howard is a tool. That's brilliant. I'm not a big Stern fan, but a big part of the appeal is that he pulls back the magic curtain of radio and talks about what happens behind the scenes. The inside juice, people love that.

Stations that have Howard now that won't be part of the Free FM network can have their own morning show to match their formats.
